What began on Oct. 17 as a nationwide day of action against the rising cost of living spiraled into looting and arson across France. Around 550,000 people took to the streets, the Interior Ministry said, and by the end of the weekend 2,397 had been detained and 997 police officers and gendarmes injured. Looters stripped luxury boutiques in Paris, the tower of the 143-year-old Limoges town hall collapsed in flames, and masked protesters forced their way into Marseille’s city hall. President Emmanuel Macron told the nation that those who looted would pay for it. This gallery brings together photos and videos from French streets.
