YOUR NEXT STEP

1. Check recalls using the VIN

Use the vehicle's 17-digit VIN on NHTSA's search page to check whether there is an open safety recall.

Before buying a vehicle

  • Use the vehicle's 17-digit VIN on NHTSA's search page to check whether there is an open safety recall.nhtsa.gov(Official site)
  • Check current title, mileage, salvage, damaged, flood vehicle, and, in some cases, theft records.
  • A vehicle history report does not replace a mechanic's inspection; if the dealer does not allow it, go to another dealer.
  • Check whether the used vehicle is sold with a warranty or As Is.
  • Instead of focusing on the monthly payment, consider the total amount you will pay, including interest.

Registration and insurance

  • Register the vehicle in the state where you live and learn the inspection and insurance requirements imposed by the state.
  • Get a policy that meets your state's legal minimum insurance amounts and check the lender's additional requirements.
  • Obtain the registration and sticker from the relevant county tax office.
