Prepare before childbirth
- Find out whether your doctor and hospital are in-network, as well as the deductible and out-of-pocket limits.
- You can apply for Medicaid and CHIP every month; for the Marketplace, wait for open enrollment or a special enrollment right.
- Request a separate good faith estimate from the doctor and hospital and make sure it is provided in writing.
- Request the hospital’s financial assistance policy, application form, and free or discounted care options.
Complete procedures after childbirth
- Apply within at least 30 days under employer insurance and within 60 days through HealthCare.gov; coverage may begin on the date of birth.
- If the bill is at least $400 more than the estimate, dispute it within 120 days of the date of the first bill.
- If you meet the FMLA requirements, request up to 12 weeks of leave to care for the mother and baby.
