U.S. divorce process
- Check whether you meet the residency requirement of the state where you will file and the applicable court rules.
- File for divorce in the court of the state where you meet the residency requirement.
- Resolve property division, spousal and child support, custody, and visitation arrangements with your spouse or through the court.
Register the decision in Turkey
- Ensure that the divorce decision was issued by an authority competent under the law of the country where it was issued and that it has become final.
- Prepare the application form, certified decision, Turkish translations, finality document, and identity documents.
- Apply to the Turkish mission responsible for the area where the court that issued the decision is located.
- If the request is rejected because the administrative registration requirements are not met, request recognition of the decision from a court in Turkey.
Check your immigration status
- If you hold a conditional green card and the marriage ended in divorce, consider filing Form I-751 alone under a waiver.
- Do not enter into a new marriage before the divorce becomes final; this may be considered invalid for immigration purposes.
