Topics in this section
- 16.1 Which benefits can immigrants receive?Federal benefits are primarily for U.S. citizens and “qualified aliens”; the 5-year rule and program requirements may apply. Because of the 2025–2026 changes, consult your state agency and, if necessary, an attorney before applying.
- 16.2 SNAP (food assistance, formerly known as "food stamps")SNAP is a federal benefit for low-income households to buy groceries with an EBT card. Check the immigration, income, and work requirements and apply at your state's office.
- 16.3 Medicaid and CHIP (health insurance for low-income people)Medicaid and CHIP provide health insurance to low-income people; however, immigrants' eligibility has narrowed since October 1, 2026. Learn about applying, income limits, the 5-year waiting period, and the effects on green card applications.
- 16.4 SSI, TANF, and housing assistanceEligibility requirements for SSI, TANF, and HUD housing assistance vary according to immigration status. Before applying, check your income, status, sponsor impact, and possible consequences for the green card process.
- 16.5 "Public charge": Does receiving benefits affect a green card?A public charge assessment may affect whether a person considered likely to need public assistance in the future can obtain a visa, enter the United States, or get a green card. Receiving benefits alone is not an automatic reason for denial; the person's overall circumstances are considered together.
- 16.6 Services accessible regardless of statusRegardless of immigration status, you may access services such as emergency medical care, K-12 public school, some school meals, vaccinations, and disaster assistance. However, the rules for some programs may vary by state.
