When the police stop you

  • Turn on your right signal and pull completely onto the right shoulder, preferably in a well-lit place.
  • Do not get out of the vehicle unless the officer tells you to; at night, turn on the interior light and turn down the radio.
  • Keep your hands preferably on the steering wheel and do not reach into the glove compartment or under the seat unless the officer asks you to.
  • Provide the requested driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance; tell the officer what you are going to do before reaching.
  • Stay calm and respectful, ask for an instruction you do not understand to be repeated, and get out if you are asked to leave the vehicle.
  • Even if you believe your rights have been violated, do not argue on the roadside; challenge it later.
  • Enter your plea according to the instructions on the ticket and do not miss the stated court date.
