Determine eligibility
- Depending on the principal visa holder’s status, check H-4, L-2, E, J-2, F-2, or the relevant dependent status.
- Plan the change before the 21st birthday, taking into account that children’s dependent status ends at age 21.
Prepare the documents
- For applications in Türkiye, complete a separate DS-160 for each person; for procedures inside the United States, use the appropriate I-539 or I-765 form.
- Prepare an International Family Booklet or Formula B for marriage, and Formula A or a population registry record for birth.
- Attach a certified complete English translation to each document in a foreign language.
Submit the application
- Attach a separate I-20 for F-2 and M-2, a separate DS-2019 for J-2, and an approved I-129 document for H, L, O, P, and R.
- Send it to the relevant U.S. mission in Türkiye, or, inside the United States, to the USCIS address required by the form and application.
- If eligible for H-4 or J-2 work authorization, submit Form I-765 and do not work before the EAD card arrives.
- Track each family member’s own I-94 date and apply for an extension before the period expires.
