How to get a Social Security Number (SSN): checklist

Choose the application method appropriate for your status, complete the SSA application with original documents, and update your records after the card arrives.

0/8 steps done
YOUR NEXT STEP

1. Wait for your work authorization to begin

A future-dated document does not count as work authorization; F-1 students are an exception to this rule.

Prepare for the application

  • A future-dated document does not count as work authorization; F-1 students are an exception to this rule.
  • Depending on your status, use the automatic application, online initiation, Form SS-5, or the relevant unit abroad.
  • Prepare the required documents showing your age, identity, and lawful status; the SSA requires originals instead of photocopies.

Complete the SSA application

  • After applying online, take your documents to an SSA office within 45 days; otherwise, the application will be deleted.
  • After completing Form SS-5 or starting the online application, go to an SSA office; first applications for people 12 and older are in person.
  • The SSA reviews the documents and requests additional evidence if necessary; if everything is acceptable, it assigns your number and mails the card to your U.S. address.

Post-card procedures

  • When starting work, use the legal name on your card and your SSN on Forms I-9 and W-4.
  • Notify the SSA if your name, citizenship, or immigration status changes; if you previously used an ITIN, notify the IRS.
