Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has reiterated his warning that artificial intelligence could cause permanent job losses in the labor market. Amodei stated that this may not be just a temporary adjustment often mentioned in the tech sector, but rather a result inherent to the nature of AI's way of working.
In his recent policy assessment, Amodei wrote that a "significant and permanent job loss" is a strong possibility. According to him, since AI is evolving to increasingly mimic cognitive tasks performed by the human mind, the resulting employment contraction may stem not only from company choices but also from the technology's structure.
Job Loss Warning Is Not New
Amodei had previously spoken about a similar risk. He had said that AI could eliminate half of entry-level white-collar jobs within five years and push unemployment to between 10% and 20%, urging companies and policymakers not to underestimate these risks.
In his latest article, rather than outlining a specific disaster scenario, he focused on how governments should respond if permanent losses occur. Amodei emphasized that the main goal should be to slow the damage and spread the benefits generated by AI more broadly.
Proposed Measures
Amodei advocated for better measurement and monitoring of AI’s effects on the workforce. He proposed expanding government statistics, implementing wage insurance for workers who lose jobs and take lower-paying positions, and introducing tax incentives to encourage job retention.
The article also mentioned workforce training grants and stronger job-matching infrastructure. Amodei noted that if AI permanently reduces demand for human labor, more advanced measures might be considered.
These could include long-term income support similar to universal basic income and taxes on companies profiting from AI or on capital gains. Amodei also introduced the idea of universal capital accounts to share AI-generated wealth.
Shift in Industry Tone Draws Attention
Amodei’s assessment comes at a time when leading figures in the industry have recently emphasized productivity gains and new economic opportunities. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is also noted for highlighting the economic benefits of AI rather than focusing on job loss warnings.
Anthropic’s latest policy note stated that the company aims to help corporate clients do more with their existing workforce. Amodei argued that if AI’s opportunities are truly this significant, society must prepare a plan for workers who cannot automatically share in these gains.
Thus, the debate has shifted from how fast AI will grow to who will bear the cost of that growth.
