U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth spoke at an autonomous warfare panel held as part of the United States Army Association's annual meeting and exposition in Washington. During the panel, anti-war demonstrators criticized U.S. military actions and called for an end to the war with Iran.
Protesters interrupted Hegseth's speech several times. One demonstrator shouted, "Children are starving in Gaza! He is a war criminal!" while another held up a sign reading, "No war with Iran."

Hegseth continued his speech despite the protests. Referring to one of the demonstrators, the secretary said, "They have great respect for me."
Iran and defense investment
Defending the Trump administration's military approach, Hegseth said the United States must prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. This goal was presented as one of the main justifications for the war with Iran.
Hegseth also reiterated his call for a $1.5 trillion investment in defense spending. He argued that Washington must rebuild its military to counter China's unprecedented military buildup.

Without naming China directly, Hegseth said the United States was facing "a near-peer competitor that is carrying out the largest military buildup in history." The secretary also assessed developments in artificial intelligence, robotics, space capabilities and autonomous warfare within this framework.
