At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference keynote, Apple introduced long-awaited artificial intelligence innovations. The focus was on new AI capabilities added to the Siri assistant.
This event also marked Tim Cook’s final opening speech before he hands over his duties to John Ternus in September. Cook received a prolonged standing ovation and expressed his gratitude to the audience.
New Siri to Understand More Context
Apple announced that the new version, called Siri AI, can analyze the content on the user’s screen and combine it with information on the device to provide more accurate answers. The company said this service will be available both as a standalone app and integrated into its software.
The new system is planned to be released in beta later this year. Apple says Siri has now evolved into a more capable assistant that helps users find what they need and complete tasks on Apple devices.
For example, it was shared that Siri can help prepare a menu for a World Cup viewing party by gathering recipes from the web or text messages and send invitations to friends via group chat. The camera-based Siri mode can also identify what you’re looking at and provide related information such as the nutritional value of a meal.
The visual intelligence feature also works with screenshots, for instance, checking if a backpack fits as carry-on luggage on a plane or if a pair of hiking boots fits inside a bag.
Apple Emphasizes Practical Use in AI Race
Craig Federighi, Apple’s software chief, suggested without naming names that some companies seem to be pursuing "AI for AI’s sake." According to Federighi, Apple’s approach centers on embedding AI into everyday products while prioritizing privacy.
Apple also announced collaboration with Google on the models that will underpin the new Siri and other features. These announcements came after moves by Google and OpenAI to release tools supporting AI queries involving photos and other media types.
Apple also revealed innovations in photo editing, including spatial reframing, which allows post-capture adjustment of framing to appear as if taken from a better angle.
The standalone Siri AI app is expected to launch within the year but will not initially be available in Europe and will be blocked in China due to regulatory issues.
New Era Begins as Tim Cook’s Tenure Ends
Cook announced his retirement in April, concluding a 15-year tenure during which Apple’s market value surpassed $4 trillion amid iPhone-driven growth.
John Ternus, expected to succeed him, has worked at Apple for nearly 25 years. As the engineering lead behind iPhone, iPad, and Mac for the past five years, Ternus is seen as the leading candidate to follow Cook.
Ternus did not appear on the main stage at Monday’s event. This transition coincides with the period when AI’s impact on the tech industry is most strongly felt.
Apple struggled to deliver on its AI promises made about two years ago and has yet to fully regain lost ground in this area. Cook described his time at Apple as the greatest honor of his life and expressed confidence that the best is still ahead.
