Ben Folds called for support for the National Symphony Orchestra, which is part of the Kennedy Center in Washington. Folds said the orchestra entered a difficult period after Trump's name was removed from the institution's title and facade.
The artist stated that the orchestra does not have the luxury of wasting time and that the financial shock following the presidential transition is squeezing the institution. Folds also said the orchestra is currently in serious danger, even at risk of not surviving.
The name change crisis at the Kennedy Center
The crisis grew when the institution's board of directors made a decision last year to accept the Trump-Kennedy Center name. However, last week a U.S. judge ruled that the name could not be changed without Congressional approval, and following this decision, it was announced that Trump's name would be removed from the institution's official title and facade.
Folds had resigned from the artistic advisory board of the National Symphony Orchestra when Trump took office. In his new letter, he emphasized that strong public support is needed to save the orchestra.
Folds said other orchestras have announced their programs for the rest of the year, but the National Symphony Orchestra has not been able to take such a step. He cited the fact that it is still unclear whether the orchestra even has a home as the reason.
Objections and counter-statements
The institution's spokesperson announced that they will appeal the name change decision. Trump said in a social media statement that he will work to transfer this institution to Congress.
Trump claimed that Judge Cooper and the group he described as the "radical left" want to let the institution perish. The debate around the Kennedy Center also resonated widely in the art world.
Last year, Stephen Schwartz, the composer of the musical Wicked, joined the artists boycotting by saying that the institution is no longer a free expression space away from politics as it was originally intended.
The Freedom 250 event is also affected
The debate was not limited to the Kennedy Center alone. Some artists also withdrew from the event planned for Trump's Freedom 250 celebration.
The event will take place at the National Mall in Washington DC between June 25 and July 10. The initially announced lineup included Vanilla Ice, Milli Vanilli, Flo Rida, Bret Michaels, lead singer of Poison, The Commodores, Young MC, Morris Day & The Time, and C+C Music Factory.
However, with recent developments, it was reported that many artists left the program in protest. Thus, the debate around the Kennedy Center has also extended to another major event.
