Following the withdrawal of FIFA's $20 billion bid for World Cup commercial rights, a crisis meeting held in the Moroccan capital Rabat ended with a vote of confidence for the president. FIFA's top management confirmed its full support for President Gianni Infantino.
FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström and members of the FIFA Council stated in a statement that they reiterated their full support for President Infantino. Infantino also expressed his support for the secretary general and FIFA management.
The meeting addressed the controversial $20 billion bid, which was withdrawn following widespread criticism and had proposed selling the World Cup's commercial and operational rights.
FIFA management stressed in its statement that mistakes had been acknowledged. The organization noted that 'it was not intended for the FIFA Council and FIFA member associations to feel excluded from the process and that the process should have been handled differently,' and announced that a separate apology letter had been sent to FIFA Council members and national federations for these mistakes.
FIFA announced that a review will be conducted on the matter and the results will be presented at the council's next scheduled meeting.
In its statement, FIFA also emphasized that the bid 'is no longer on the table,' and stated that it 'will no longer tolerate any attack on its integrity, good governance, and due process, and will take all necessary measures to protect its name and reputation.'
The organization expressed its belief that the results of today's meeting will strengthen FIFA's governance, restore confidence in the institution, and enable preparations for upcoming major events and challenges in unity and transparency.
