Google has formed a new team in Israel to develop an artificial intelligence chip, Haaretz reported. The team includes senior executives and hardware engineers.
Google Cloud began chip development activities in Israel in 2021, and the company employs about 700 engineers in Tel Aviv and Haifa. These engineers work on chips as well as computing infrastructure.
Development focuses on on-device artificial intelligence
The chip being developed by the new team is intended to run artificial intelligence tasks directly on devices rather than on cloud servers. This approach is aimed at accelerating processing and reducing the need for cloud resources.
Google hired Ido Bukspan, a former NVIDIA Israel executive and the chief executive of Israel-based data infrastructure and technology company Pliops, to work on its data networking chips.
Kaminitz, an executive at Israeli technology company Hailo, announced on social media that he had taken charge of the initiative. Some Hailo engineers have also joined Google’s new team.
Google declined to comment on the matter.
