Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke at a panel titled “Türkiye-U.S. Relations on the Eve of the Centennial,” organized by Türkiye’s Directorate of Communications in New York.
Fidan said Türkiye and the United States are approaching the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations, noting that the partnership has continued despite crises and major changes in the international system.
He said Türkiye-U.S. relations have gained renewed momentum and highlighted the dialogue between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and U.S. President Donald Trump as an important element in the current relationship.

$100 billion trade target
Addressing economic ties, Fidan said bilateral trade has reached approximately $40 billion and reiterated the goal of increasing trade between Türkiye and the United States to $100 billion.
He said obstacles affecting bilateral commerce, including additional tariffs, should be addressed as the two countries seek to expand trade and investment.

Fidan calls for removal of defense restrictions
Fidan also highlighted defense cooperation as a major pillar of Türkiye-U.S. relations, saying existing problems should be resolved and restrictions limiting cooperation between the two NATO allies should be removed.
He said removing such restrictions could create additional opportunities for Turkish and American companies to develop partnerships in different regions.

Message to Washington on Israel and Gaza
Fidan also addressed developments in the Middle East, describing Gaza as a critical issue for regional security and stability.
He said Türkiye expects the United States to use its influence over Israel more effectively, while emphasizing the importance of Washington’s role in supporting regional and global peace and stability.
Syria, Iraq, Ukraine, the Caucasus, the Black Sea and the Balkans were also among the regional issues Fidan discussed in the context of Türkiye-U.S. cooperation.
Focus on the second century of relations
As Türkiye and the United States approach the second century of their diplomatic relationship, Fidan emphasized the need to further institutionalize cooperation and resolve outstanding issues between the two countries.
He said Türkiye aims to strengthen the Turkish-American partnership not only at the bilateral level but also as a relationship capable of contributing to global peace, security and stability.
