U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a formal detainer request with Texas authorities, asking them not to release an 18-year-old Salvadoran migrant charged with two murders in Houston. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that the detainer for Jefferson Adonay Velasquez-Torres was transmitted on Friday.
Velasquez-Torres was charged with murder this week in connection with a shooting outside a nightclub on April 27 that killed 27-year-old Noah Ramirez. Two other people were wounded in the attack.
The suspect had also been charged with murder in June in connection with the killing of 17-year-old Angel Garcia at a house party last August. Enrique Aguilar, 19, was also arrested in connection with Garcia's murder.
In a written statement, Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Lauren Bis said, "This criminal alien has been charged with murder twice following two deadly shootings in Houston. He would not be in our country were it not for the reckless open-border policies of the Obama Administration." Bis added, "As ICE officers, we have asked Texas not to release this heinous killer from custody without court authorization. Fortunately, Texas is cooperating with us, and together we will ensure that this public safety threat is never released back onto the streets."
Velasquez-Torres entered the U.S. illegally in 2014, during President Barack Obama's second term, as an unaccompanied minor and was released into the country. The suspect also faces charges of unlawfully carrying a weapon and aggravated robbery.
Velasquez-Torres, who was denied bail over the second murder charge, remains held at the Harry County Jail.
