Toronto Tempo star Marina Mabrey tied the WNBA single-game scoring record by dropping 53 points in a 125-97 win over the Los Angeles Sparks. Mabrey connected on 9 of 18 three-point attempts, sharing the record previously held by A'ja Wilson and Liz Cambage with her impressive performance.
Mabrey had set a league record with 9 three-pointers against Connecticut on June 19, reaching a career-high 37 points in that game. Against the Sparks, she surpassed that mark by scoring 39 points by the end of the third quarter and added 14 more in the final frame to achieve the historic feat.
Toronto, now 9-9 on the season, started the game fast. With three-pointers from Mabrey, Maria Conde and Julie Allemand, Tempo jumped out to a 19-6 run before four minutes had elapsed, never trailed throughout the game, and extended the lead to as many as 35 points. Toronto shot 20-of-42 from beyond the arc as a team.
Conde finished with 13 points and 7 rebounds on 3-of-5 three-point shooting, while Allemand scored 13 points on 3-of-3 from deep and dished out a career-high 14 assists. Laura Juskaite came off the bench to contribute 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to the victory.
On the Los Angeles Sparks side, Nneka Ogwumike and Dearica Hamby each scored 21 points. Rae Burrell added 17 points, while Ogwumike grabbed 7 rebounds and Hamby had 9. Sparks guards Erica Wheeler and Ariel Atkins dealt with foul trouble, and Cameron Brink was sidelined with an ankle injury.
The absence of the league's leading scorer, Kelsey Plum, due to a leg injury suffered in New York's win, limited the Sparks' offensive effectiveness. The Los Angeles team got off to a poor start and never recovered.
