Hundreds of demonstrators filled the streets surrounding United Nations headquarters in New York as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
The protest, coordinated by Jewish Voice for Peace Action, brought together Jewish, Palestinian, Iranian and Lebanese New Yorkers, activists, public figures and elected officials opposed to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and continued U.S. military support for Israel.
Demonstrators staged a sit-in on First Avenue near the UN complex, blocking traffic for more than an hour. Official vehicles heading toward the United Nations were diverted as the protest continued.
Participants carried banners reading “Fund people, not bombs,” “End the genocide” and “Free Palestine,” while chants calling for Gaza to be allowed to live echoed through the streets surrounding the UN.

Images from the scene showed a large crowd occupying the roadway as police officers surrounded the demonstration and began ordering participants to disperse.
The demonstration coincided with Netanyahu’s appearance before world leaders at the General Assembly, where he defended Israel’s military actions and rejected accusations directed at his government.
Dozens Detained as Protest Continues
NYPD officers detained dozens of demonstrators who remained in the roadway following orders to disperse.
Among those detained were actors Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder, whistleblower Chelsea Manning, comedian Caleb Hearon and several New York elected officials and political candidates.
Despite the police intervention, demonstrators continued their protest near UN headquarters as Netanyahu delivered his address.
The gathering was one of several demonstrations organized in New York during Netanyahu’s visit, with additional protests planned across Manhattan.
The scenes outside the UN underscored the opposition Netanyahu faced on the streets of New York as international debate over Israel’s military operations in Gaza continued inside the General Assembly.
