In Christopher Nolan's new film 'Odyssey,' the arms seen in the fight scenes of Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, against giants actually belong to 34-year-old female stunt double Devin Dalton. According to The New York Times (NYT), Dalton, who is 137 centimeters tall and 40 centimeters shorter than Matt Damon, took on this role thanks to the forced perspective technique.
The proportion of female stunt doubles in Hollywood is quite low. According to SAG-AFTRA union data, only 20 percent of stunt performers in the industry are women. While it is common for male stunt doubles to stand in for female characters in dangerous scenes, it is rare for a woman to double for a male lead actor.
Short Stature, Grand Illusion
Nolan used the forced perspective method, an optical illusion, to make Odysseus's soldiers appear smaller against giant enemies. This technique was previously used in 'The Lord of the Rings' to make the character Gandalf appear larger. This time, the goal was to shrink the heroes, requiring a stunt double much shorter than the actors. Devin Dalton, at 137 cm, met this need.
Dalton closely studied Matt Damon's movements and posture on set during filming. 'Part of our job is not to be noticed. That's why I'm so grateful for Matt's generosity and appreciation,' she said.
Praise from Matt Damon
Dalton's involvement in this role came to light through a statement Matt Damon made in an interview. Responding to a compliment about his biceps in the giant fight scene, Damon praised his stunt double, saying, 'Actually, those arms belong to Devin Dalton,' and described them as 'the most magnificent arms I've ever seen.'
A Career First
Devin Dalton has been a stunt performer since 2011. She has worked on the 'Planet of the Apes' trilogy, the series 'The Last of Us,' and the film 'Weapons.' However, 'Odyssey' marks the first project where she doubled for a male actor.
Dalton says she constantly trains in various disciplines to be ready at any moment. 'I learned to swim in cold water and hold my breath for a long time so that if a job offer comes, I can say, "Great, I'm ready,"' she says, adding that she sometimes works on dangerous scenes without even telling her mother.
