According to a statement by the US Department of Justice, Nigerian Samuel Ugberase was charged with fraud by a grand jury in the Eastern District of North Carolina in 2021. Ugberase is alleged to have deceived victims through online romantic fraud methods to get them to send money. Ugberase and Nigerian Oluwadamilare Kolaogunbule, who acted together and hold natural citizenship, are said to have manipulated victims with fake identities and fabricated stories. It was also stated that the money obtained through fraud was laundered through bank accounts opened in the name of export companies and the source of the money was concealed. The FBI arrested Ugberase upon his arrival in the US. If the charges are accepted, Ugberase could face up to 40 years in prison. This case is one of the latest examples under the long-standing extradition agreement between the US and Nigeria. Similar extraditions of Nigerians to the US on similar charges had occurred in 2023 and previous years. Authorities emphasize the importance of such international cooperation in combating cybercrime.
