Pope Leo XIV, who was returning to the Vatican after completing a four-day official visit to France, said while answering journalists’ questions on the plane that experts’ concerns about the risks artificial intelligence could create must be taken seriously.
Leo, the head of the Vatican City State, said these warnings should not be dismissed as baseless reports made to secure financial or other benefits. The pope said political leaders, industry representatives, organizations and social institutions should carry out a joint assessment in global discussions on artificial intelligence.
He addressed remarks by an Nvidia official
Leo commented on remarks by an official from the U.S.-based chipmaker Nvidia that safety barriers or optional restrictions could be implemented to prevent artificial intelligence systems from going beyond their intended areas of operation and causing harm.

The pope said the same official had argued that governments should not impose mandatory restrictions or regulations in the field of artificial intelligence. Leo said current developments and possible future scenarios should be considered together, adding that closing one’s eyes to reality is not a responsible approach.
Leo said it would not be enough to claim that certain risks would never emerge, and added that concerns about artificial intelligence must be examined seriously.
Criticism of military spending
Pope Leo XIV also criticized the allocation of large amounts of resources to armaments and major military industries. Saying that a small number of people in these sectors make substantial profits and that wars are being encouraged, Leo said billions of euros or dollars could instead be allocated to addressing problems such as hunger, the housing crisis and unemployment around the world.

Leo said some powers were trying to impose their will through force rather than resolving existing disputes through dialogue and negotiation, adding that this approach was steadily increasing the likelihood of war and conflict.
Call for dialogue between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine
Speaking about the Russia-Ukraine war, the pope called on the leaders of Russia, Ukraine and other countries to sit around the same table and seek solutions to the problems.
Leo called for an end to persistence in wars that he said had lost their meaning and urged the parties to establish dialogue instead.
