Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory telegram to U.S. President Donald Trump on the occasion of the country's 250th independence anniversary.
According to a statement from the Kremlin on Saturday, Putin underlined in the telegram the need to maintain dialogue between the two countries.
Putin noted that the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence was not only the beginning of the country's founding, but also a significant turning point in world history. He recalled that Russia at that time supported the struggle of the colonies in North America for independence against British rule.
Noting that the two countries fought as allies in both world wars, Putin emphasized that as the world's two largest nuclear powers, Moscow and Washington bear a special responsibility for ensuring global security and stability.
In the telegram, Putin stated, "I believe that establishing constructive, equal, and mutually beneficial relations between Moscow and Washington is in the interests of both our peoples and the entire international community."
The American people celebrate their independence from the British crown every year on July 4.
