Speaking at the congress of the United Russia party, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the parliamentary elections planned for September 18–20 would demonstrate the country’s stability.
According to Putin, the vote will also show the maturity of Russia’s political system and its ability to withstand external threats, blackmail and attacks. He said the elections would reflect the common will of millions of people and their desire to protect the country’s sovereignty and security.
Governance and defense projects take center stage
Putin said that, despite all the challenges the country faces, wide-ranging projects aimed at improving the quality of public administration, defense capabilities, economic growth and social development were being developed and implemented.
Putin said the new opportunities created by these projects should strengthen Russia’s sovereignty, security and position in the world. He added that elections would continue in various regions of the country and at different levels of government.
450 seats to be determined in the State Duma
In the elections planned for September, voters will cast ballots for 450 seats in the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s bicameral parliament, for its ninth legislative term.
Putin also said that the situation on the front line in Ukraine had deteriorated and accused Kyiv of carrying out increasingly ruthless and barbaric attacks against Russia. In recent months, Moscow and Kyiv have targeted each other’s logistics hubs, ports and energy infrastructure.
Both sides deny deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure and maintain that their attacks are directed at military targets or facilities linked to military activities.
