Serena Williams was eliminated in the first round of Wimbledon, losing 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3 to Australian youngster Maya Joint in her first singles match since returning to tennis.
The 44-year-old Williams played her first professional singles match since announcing she was "stepping away" from the sport in 2022. 20-year-old Maya Joint said she could not sleep until 2:00 am before the match, adding, "The start was very nerve-wracking. When I tried to close out the match, Serena definitely raised her level."
The 23-time Grand Slam champion Williams received a standing ovation on court as fans held up signs saying "Welcome Back." The American legend last won Wimbledon 10 years ago and last won a Grand Slam title at the 2017 Australian Open.
