In Louisiana, the suspect in the fatal shooting of a federal officer will face the death penalty. Clarence A. Frazier Jr., 48, wanted on sexual assault charges, opened fire on US Marshals Service officers who came to his home to arrest him.
According to the US Attorney's Office for the Western District of Louisiana, during the raid on July 13, Frazier barricaded himself inside his home and opened fire, critically wounding federal officer Drew Hanson. Hanson died after being taken to a hospital.
The US Attorney's Office has charged Frazier with killing a federal officer. If convicted, he could face life in prison or the death penalty.
Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche said, "The defendant's alleged actions cost the life of a dedicated law enforcement officer who was simply doing his duty." He added, "The suspect is now in custody and will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."
Officials said Frazier was awaiting trial in state court on charges of sexual assault of a disabled person, but a warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to appear in court. The US Marshals Service and the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office located the suspect's address and obtained a search warrant.
Officers entering the home reported that Frazier had barricaded himself in a bedroom and opened fire. After a lengthy standoff, the suspect was taken into custody. No one else was injured.
The slain officer Drew Hanson was remembered as a devoted husband, father, and son.
