Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol discussed steps to strengthen energy security in Tokyo on Monday.
According to a statement from Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Takaichi said her country aimed to advance the POWERR GX initiative globally. She said the effort was intended to strengthen the resilience of global energy supply and demand structures.
Three areas Takaichi identified for energy security
Takaichi said the international community needed to take stronger steps in three areas to ensure global energy security. She identified these as safeguarding free and transparent energy trade, strengthening international coordination in building oil stockpiles, and improving coordination between producer and consumer countries.
The POWERR GX initiative aims to strengthen the stability of fossil fuel supplies and accelerate and implement the process known as the Green Transformation. The initiative is being carried out as part of Japan's efforts to increase the resilience of its energy supply and demand structure.
Cooperation with the IEA on critical minerals
Birol said he appreciated Japan's energy policies, including POWERR Asia and POWERR GX. The IEA executive director said the agency would work closely with Tokyo to strengthen global energy security and stabilize energy markets.
The meeting also addressed diversifying energy supply sources and strengthening the resilience of critical minerals supply chains. Japan and the IEA agreed to continue close cooperation at a time of challenging global energy prospects.
Birol also met with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. The meeting addressed strengthening the presence of Japanese personnel within the IEA and improving the resilience of critical minerals supply chains; the two sides agreed to continue close cooperation.
