Trump says US is working to buy potash from Belarus more cheaply than from Canada
U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that the United States is working to buy large quantities of potash from Belarus at a much lower price than it pays Canada. Canada is the United States’ largest potash supplier and the world’s biggest producer.
U.S. President Donald Trump said the Washington administration is working to buy large quantities of potash from Belarus at a lower price than from Canada.
In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump said the price of potash purchased from Belarus would be much lower than what the United States currently pays Canada. The U.S. president said such a price would be good news for American farmers and those involved in livestock production.
Canada ranks first in the world in potash production and remains the United States’ main supplier of the fertilizer component. Belarus ranks third in global production.
According to Natural Resources Canada, Canada produced approximately 25 million tons of potash in 2024, accounting for 32.8 percent of global production. Belarus produced approximately 12.1 million tons that year, giving it a 15.9 percent share of global production.
