The bodies of two of the three ironworkers who went missing after a partial collapse of a parking garage under construction in Philadelphia were recovered from the debris five days later. The incident occurred near 30th Street and Grays Ferry Avenue. The workers recovered from the debris were members of the Ironworkers 401 union. The third worker was taken to the hospital immediately after the incident but passed away.
Fire officials stated that the bodies were found in a stairwell, one of the unique architectural features of the parking garage. Rescue teams conducted their work carefully by breaking down the debris into pieces and using dogs trained to detect human remains. Additionally, the remaining part of the structure was demolished for safety reasons.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker announced that a comprehensive and independent investigation into the incident will be launched. Parker expressed condolences to the families of the workers and union members, stating that the city stands with them during this difficult time. Authorities have not yet shared the identities of the workers with the public. Findings regarding the cause of the incident will be announced after forensic examinations are completed.
