UK Defence Secretary John Healey announced his resignation due to a disagreement with Prime Minister Keir Starmer over the defence budget. Healey shared his resignation letter on X, making the decision public.
Call for "More Investment"
In his letter, Healey emphasized the need for the government to invest more in defence. The minister stated that the Armed Forces are not being provided with the necessary resources and that he could not accept the Defence Investment Plan agreement.
Healey also accused Prime Minister Starmer of failing to allocate the necessary state resources to defend the country. He criticized the Treasury for being unwilling to provide the required funding for defence amid increasing threats.
Months of Budget Negotiations
The UK’s defence and finance ministries have been negotiating for months on how to meet rising military spending demands. This process has led to the Defence Investment Plan being postponed since last year.
Healey’s resignation marks the latest step highlighting how deep the disagreement over the defence budget has become within the government.
