In the US state of Tennessee, a church belonging to the charismatic Christian movement has launched a spiritual war to combat demonic influences in the area. The church, called 'The Well,' sees the library and café across the street as a manifestation of the devil's dominion.
The church was founded in 2016 by Mike Brewer and his wife Andrea Brewer. The leaders describe themselves as 'spiritual warriors' and claim they have been tasked with cleansing the area of witchcraft and demonic activity. Instead of traditional services, the church features loud music, dim lights, and emotional rituals.
During 'deliverance' sessions held every Thursday evening, the aim is to cast out evil spirits from people believed to be under demonic influence. The church also employs the concept of 'strategic spiritual warfare,' seeking to break the geographical and institutional influence of demons through prayer.
Library and café targeted
Church leaders concluded that the center of demonic activity was not a pagan temple but the library and café directly across from them. LGBTQ+ events and Democratic Party meetings held at these venues were interpreted as signs of the demon Lilith's dominion over the area.
Members organized marches around the library, believing their prayers drove out demons. The church also discovered an old local ordinance prohibiting cabaret-style performances within a thousand feet of a church and reported it to the prosecutor, police, and local authorities.
A rising movement in the US
These events in Maryville reflect the growing influence of the charismatic movement within US Christianity. While traditional Protestant churches are losing members, millions of Americans are turning to independent churches that embrace the idea of 'spiritual warfare.'
According to a 2024 survey by Paul Goble of Denison University, about 61% of American Christians believe that apostles and prophets exist today. Another survey published in December 2025 found that 59% of Evangelical Christians support churches organizing prayer campaigns to expel high-ranking demons from regions.
Experts note that such rhetoric can become a tool that legitimizes hostility toward political and cultural opponents.
