US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the damage Iran causes in the Gulf will be compensated with funds withdrawn from Iranian accounts. Bessent conveyed that this approach will further increase economic pressure.
In a statement on the social media platform X, Bessent wrote that any damage Iran causes to its allies in the Gulf will be paid for with money taken from Iranian accounts. In the same post, he emphasized that funds collected from Iranian sources will be used to cover the damage caused by Tehran.
The statement came at a time when Washington has hardened its rhetoric against Tehran. On the same day, US President Donald Trump announced that his country would carry out new attacks on Iran and sent a message regarding Iran's key oil infrastructure.
The report noted that the US and Israel have been conducting attacks on Iranian targets since the end of February, which has triggered a regional conflict. This conflict has disrupted major energy routes and pushed global energy prices higher.
Bessent said that Iran's attacks will only deepen the economic and financial consequences it faces. This conveyed Washington's readiness to increase economic pressure on Iran.
Bessent also stated that every payment made for the newly established structure responsible for collecting transit fees through the Strait of Hormuz will be covered from Iranian accounts.
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic waterway through which a significant portion of the world's energy shipments pass. The report included information that since the conflict began, Iran has effectively restricted access to the strait and that the relevant authority announced on Thursday that transit would remain completely closed until further notice.
It was recalled that Bessent had previously said Washington would not allow a transit fee system to be established in the Strait of Hormuz and warned that additional sanctions could be imposed on individuals and entities involved in this practice.
