Strong winds that swept through British Columbia in western Canada over the weekend caused wildfires to intensify again. More than 5,000 people were evacuated from areas threatened by the fires, and some highways were closed to traffic.
According to a statement from Okanagan Emergency Management, the fire that started on Saturday at Quilpituk Creek has spread across 550 hectares. Evacuation orders were issued for more than 2,000 properties in the area, while over 400 properties were placed under an evacuation alert. The Caesars Landing area near Okanagan Lake was also included in the evacuation order.
The BC Wildfire Service announced that the fire in the North Okanagan region more than doubled in size over the weekend, growing from about 10 square kilometers to 26 square kilometers. In response, the evacuation order in the area was expanded. Officials said the fire and weather conditions are being closely monitored, the existing evacuation orders are not expected to be lifted yet, and additional evacuation orders may be issued if needed.
As of Sunday, 31 new wildfires had started across the province in the previous 24 hours, nine of which had been extinguished. The statement warned that lower temperatures, increased humidity, and easing winds were expected to reduce the fire's impact, but the risk of new fires persists due to drought-affected vegetation.
