Linda Masarira, one of the prominent figures of the opposition in Zimbabwe and known as a human rights activist, passed away at the age of 43. Masarira, who was the founder and leader of the Labour Economists and African Democrats (LEAD) party in 2019, was an active advocate for the rights of women, children, and marginalized segments of society. Having been involved in opposition politics over the last decade, Masarira was unable to participate in the presidential race in 2023 due to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission raising candidacy fees from $1,000 to $20,000. Her close friend Abigale Mupambi described Masarira as a comrade to many. Masarira's death is regarded as the loss of an important figure in Zimbabwe's opposition and civil society.
