TORONTO — New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone slept through the final stretch of the New York Knicks' first NBA championship in 53 years.
Boone said he watched the fourth quarter of Saturday night's final closely, but fell asleep with six minutes left on the clock. He only learned that the Knicks had lifted the trophy and Jalen Brunson was named Finals MVP on Sunday morning.
While the Yankees were in Canada to wrap up a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays, Boone explained he had to follow the events later through a SportsCentre broadcast. When he drifted off, the Knicks had cut the deficit to four points despite trailing by their largest margin of the game at one stage.
Boone said that for many people in New York, this championship was a long-awaited moment. Praising how the team came together during the season and their playoff run, he stated that this achievement will be remembered for a long time.
A close city-wide relationship also exists between the Yankees and the Knicks. Boone said he has felt a fondness for Jalen Brunson ever since meeting him at Yankee Stadium two years ago.
The Yankees are also planning a bobblehead giveaway for Josh Hart in late September. Hart's great-uncle Elston Howard stands out as one of the significant figures in Yankees history.
Karl-Anthony Towns, who plays for the Knicks, is also known as a die-hard Yankees fan and previously threw out a ceremonial first pitch while wearing a Minnesota Timberwolves jersey. Yankees captain Aaron Judge was among those watching Game 4 of the final; Judge is continuing his recovery from a rib stress fracture.
Boone's personal fandom history stretches back to the Philadelphia 76ers. He said his home in Connecticut holds memorabilia from Moses Malone, Julius Erving, Maurice Cheeks and Andrew Toney of the 1983 Sixers squad that swept the Los Angeles Lakers.
Boone acknowledged that he knows the feeling New Yorkers are experiencing right now, but said he sees the picture differently from the Yankees' side. Boone, who has been at the helm of the team since 2018, reminded everyone that the Yankees' last World Series title came in 2009 and stressed that the season is still very long.
It was recalled that during Boone's tenure, which began after taking over the job following a Game 7 loss in the 2017 American League Championship Series, the Yankees are expected to win a title in the near future. Despite Aaron Judge's rise to stardom and the hopes generated by the young roster, the Knicks' championship has once again made the Yankees' longing for a title, which has lasted since 2009, visible.
