Tyler Ulrich, a 21-year-old safety for Southern Nazarene University’s football team, died Thursday, Oct. 15, five days after suffering a traumatic injury during a game, the school said.
Ulrich was hurt on Saturday, Oct. 10, during SNU’s game against Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Play was halted for nearly an hour while he received medical care before he was taken to a hospital. SNU lost the game 49-14.
The private NCAA Division II school in Bethany, Oklahoma, did not disclose the nature of the injury, which media reports described as a head injury. University President Keith Newman said Ulrich died in the hospital surrounded by family, teammates and close friends. “May God’s peace and comfort be with us all,” Newman wrote.

“Ultimate example of quiet strength”
Head coach Dustin Hada called Ulrich a “Man of God” and the “ultimate example of quiet strength.” SNU Athletics said the loss is “deeply felt across our campus” and asked people to pray for his family and teammates. The school held a campuswide prayer chapel in his honor on Tuesday.
A native of Azle, Texas, Ulrich was in his third season at SNU. He made 16 starts in 20 games, including six this season, and was third on the team with 36 tackles.
Jason Vines, his longtime coach at Azle High School, described him as “a very selfless man, young man, and a very, very, good teammate,” and recalled that Ulrich came back over the summer to help younger players. SNU canceled its Saturday game at Southwestern Oklahoma State, and a verified GoFundMe fundraiser has been launched.
