Apple unveiled its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, at an event held at its campus in Cupertino, California. John Ternus, the company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), who took over from Tim Cook on September 1, appeared on stage for the first time as CEO.
Ternus said smartphones should combine the large-screen experience with a design that fits in a pocket or the palm of a hand. He said Apple had focused on the screen ratio, ease of use and engineering solutions in its foldable phone, adding that this design was the most suitable option for achieving that goal.
iPhone Duo display and sales schedule
The iPhone Duo, which features a 7.6-inch inner display when unfolded, was designed for viewing content, gaming and multitasking. The device’s display will feature a special nano-textured surface intended to reduce glare.
When the phone is folded, users will have access to a 5.4-inch outer display. Within a compact design that fits in a pocket, this screen will offer 90 percent of the display area of the iPhone 18 Pro.
The iPhone Duo will launch in “star white” and “night sky” color options. Preorders will open in more than 70 countries starting October 16. The model will go on sale October 23 with a starting price of $1,999.
Prices of iPhone 18 Pro models rise
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max were also unveiled at the event. Apple announced that the new models would offer improvements in intelligence, performance, battery life and camera features compared with previous phones.
The iPhone 18 Pro will provide up to 24 hours of use on a single charge, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max will provide up to 30 hours. The phones will be available in black, silver, glacier blue and burgundy, with starting prices of $1,199 and $1,299, respectively.
The iPhone 17 Pro, unveiled the previous year, had a starting price of $1,099, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max started at $1,199. The new iPhone models will be available for preorder in more than 65 countries, including Türkiye, starting September 12.
Apple will also introduce the “Apple Reference Image” feature, which shows that a photo was taken with an iPhone and not generated by artificial intelligence. The feature will not be available when it launches because of legal regulations in the European Union and China.
AirPods 5 and Apple Watch updates
Apple announced that the new wireless earbuds, AirPods 5, would offer 50 percent more noise cancellation than the previous generation. AirPods 5 will have a starting price of $129.
The Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 were also unveiled with updates to their health and fitness features. The Series 12 will start at $399, while the Ultra 4 will start at $799.
Preorders for the new earbuds and smartwatch models will begin on the day of the event. Apple will release its new products other than the iPhone Duo on September 18.
