NASA's space telescope named after Nancy Grace Roman, the agency's first astronomer, was launched into space from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida at around 7:30 a.m. local time.
The launch was carried out using a Falcon rocket belonging to SpaceX, a space, aviation and artificial intelligence company. The telescope, whose cost was put at $4.3 billion, is expected to take more than three months to reach its target position.
Thousands of supernovae and tens of thousands of planets to be studied
Nicky Fox, NASA's associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate, said the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is designed to detect thousands of supernovae, tens of thousands of planets, and billions of galaxies and stars.
Fox said the telescope has a field of view more than 100 times wider than that of the Hubble Space Telescope. She said this capacity would enable the study of regions that have never been observed before.
