Belgium announced that the heatwave that swept Europe late last month caused over 2,000 deaths. The country's mortality rate rose to 48 percent during this period.
According to data from the European Mortality Monitoring Network (EuroMOMO), during the same heatwave, the death rate in France was recorded at 23 percent, and in the Netherlands at 13 percent. Belgium had the highest increase with this rate.
Experts say that a 'thermal dome' formed by high-pressure systems trapped hot air, leading to record temperatures and being the main cause of this heatwave.
Data revealed that extreme heat had more devastating effects, especially in areas where impoverished communities live.
It is noted that climate change and greenhouse gas emissions are increasing the frequency and severity of such extreme weather events.
