BMW management reached an agreement with employee representatives on a voluntary separation program after weeks of negotiations. According to German media reports, the program will begin in October 2026 and continue until the end of 2027.
Under the program, the total workforce will be reduced by 8,000. BMW, which employs 150,000 people worldwide and around 84,000 in Germany, will offer voluntary departure to about 40,000 staff not directly involved in production.
The voluntary separation program will primarily cover employees in management, R&D, planning and administrative units. The amount of severance pay will be determined based on employees' salaries and seniority.
BMW had cited global competitive pressure and rising costs when announcing these savings measures. In June, the company revised downward its 2026 sales and profit expectations, particularly due to factors such as the demand contraction in the Chinese market and US customs tariffs.
