The toll from the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month has climbed even higher. National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said on social media that the death toll from the June 24 disasters rose by 579 to 6,125, with the number of injured reaching 16,740.
Interim President Delcy Rodriguez, speaking about post-disaster aid and reconstruction efforts, outlined plans at a housing delivery ceremony in the capital Caracas. "In addition to these 4,000 homes we will deliver by December, we are continuing land surveys and clearing sites to begin construction on new houses. Moreover, this number does not include new projects we will build from scratch," she said.
Conveying a message of support to citizens in the disaster zone, Rodriguez said: "Our aim is to bring peace and happiness to our citizens who have been severely affected by this double earthquake; to make them feel that they are not alone. We want every person, every child, and every elder staying in temporary tent cities and camps to know that they are not alone."
