At the Mubadala DC Open tennis tournament in Washington, Filipino Alexandra Eala delivered her country's first WTA singles title, while American Taylor Fritz lifted the men's trophy.
Eala's Historic Victory
The 21-year-old Alexandra Eala defeated world number three Jessica Pegula of the United States 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the women's singles final. In the final, which was spread over two days due to rain, Eala won 10 of the last 13 games to claim her first WTA title.
"I feel so much love. This is my first championship opportunity, I know it won't be my last, and I've already achieved this milestone for my career."
Eala expressed her feelings after the victory. Pegula, who won this tournament in 2019, praised her opponent, saying, "It's great to see how much she has progressed over the last few years."
Fritz Wins Men's Title
In the men's final, 28-year-old American Taylor Fritz defeated 19-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar 7-6(2), 6-4 to capture his 11th ATP title. Regaining his form after a knee injury, Fritz delivered an effective performance, winning 81% of his first-serve points.
The DC Open, which was marked by heavy rain, concluded as an important stop in the hard-court season ahead of the US Open.
