The European Central Bank raised its policy interest rate by 25 basis points to 2.25%. The bank also increased the main refinancing operations rate to 2.4% and the marginal lending facility rate to 2.65%.
The decision was announced following the two-day Governing Council meeting held on June 10-11. ECB President Christine Lagarde made the announcement at a press conference in Frankfurt.
After keeping rates steady since June 2025, the central bank has now implemented a new increase, tightening its monetary policy stance.
The rate hike comes amid accelerating inflation in the eurozone. The Governing Council's decision is being closely monitored for indications on the future direction of monetary policy.
For markets, this move stands out as one of the key developments setting the new level of borrowing costs in the eurozone.
