Russell T Davies’ new miniseries Tip Toe focuses on the rise of online radicalization and anti-gay hostility. Starring Alan Cumming and David Morrissey, the story revolves around escalating tensions between Leo Struthers, a gay bar owner, and his electrician neighbor Clive Goss.
The cast also includes Elizabeth Berrington, Denise Welch, Pooky Quesnel, Jackson Connor, Joseph Evans, Iz Hesketh, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, Gabriel Clark, and Paul Rhys. The five-episode series is directed by Peter Hoar and is available to watch on Channel 4.
The finale scene is shown from the start
The series opens by revealing the outcome of the finale, beginning with a scene showing Leo Struthers hanging from a street lamp outside his home. The narrative then rewinds ten days to explore the events leading to this shocking conclusion.
The final episode depicts the entire process leading to Leo’s death. Clive hosts a football viewing party at his home with his sons George and Saul and some friends, while Leo spends the day with his next-door neighbor Stephanie.
Zee Malone, seeing online videos suggesting George was harassed by other boys at the party, visits the house to check on him. However, George becomes more anxious because he fears that being seen with Zee might reveal his sexual orientation to his father and family.
Tension escalates step by step
Zee’s arrival changes the course of events. Encouraged by Zee, Leo goes next door to check on George, but his intentions are soon questioned. Shortly after, a blown-up photo of George wearing makeup from the previous night appears on TV, and provoked by the other boys, Clive loses control and attacks Leo.
Clive’s anger, past mistakes, and reaction toward his neighbor spiral into an irrational act of violence. Ultimately, during the assault led by Clive, Leo is hanged from the street lamp. Meanwhile, Leo’s friends watch in horror, threatened not to leave the house.
The fate of the characters is also revealed on screen
After the finale, text cards provide updates on the characters’ lives. Clive’s wife Marie moves to Scotland with George and Saul. Clive receives a mandatory life sentence for his role in the murder.
Zee Malone changes her name to Sarah and becomes a teacher. Stephanie retires early and travels the world. Melba is said to have remained drunk for the rest of her life after that day.
The most striking card at the end shows how Leo’s story has been distorted over the years with false information. It states that during a search 18 months later, his name appeared as "Leo Struthers - Convicted Pedophile."
Not a true story, but inspired by real life
Although the final cards give the impression the series is based on a true event, Tip Toe is not based on a real story. Russell T Davies has said the series was inspired by various incidents from his own life and others’ experiences.
Davies explained that some experiences at work and home motivated him to write this story, but he chose not to share details to avoid encouraging similar events. The series thus illustrates how online hate and misinformation can grow through a fictional narrative.
