President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan described Israel’s actions in Gaza as “complete genocide” during an interview with Fox News in New York and blamed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Erdoğan made the remarks during an interview with Fox News anchor Bret Baier while attending the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025.
Asked whether he considered what was happening in Gaza to be genocide, Erdoğan said there was no other way to describe the situation and called it “complete genocide,” attributing responsibility to Netanyahu.
Erdoğan said Türkiye strongly opposed Israel’s military operations in Gaza and pointed to the high number of Palestinians killed and wounded during the conflict.
The Turkish president also addressed the issue of hostages held by Hamas, arguing that responsibility for the conflict should not be placed solely on Hamas and that Israel’s actions must also be taken into account.

Erdoğan Addresses Hamas and Gaza War
During the interview, Erdoğan said he did not consider Hamas a terrorist organization, instead describing it as a “resistance group.”
He also argued that there was a major imbalance in military capabilities between Israel and Hamas and criticized Israel’s use of military force in densely populated Gaza.
Erdoğan was also asked about efforts to end the humanitarian crisis and referred to U.S. President Donald Trump’s previous pledges to end both the Gaza conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war.
Türkiye has repeatedly described Israel’s military campaign in Gaza as genocide. Israel rejects the genocide accusation and says its military operations are directed against Hamas.
