Police officers in Orange County, Florida, USA, opened fire on a woman holding a kitchen knife. The woman was taken to hospital but could not be saved.
The incident occurred on June 3 on Tivoli Street. Police responded to a call and went to the home; after knocking on the door, they saw the woman come out holding a knife. Despite warnings to drop the knife, she continued to advance, and three officers fired their weapons.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office released body camera footage and a statement about the incident. The statement said the woman made threatening remarks toward the officers and threatened to "end their lives." First aid was administered to the injured woman at the scene, but she died at the hospital.
The sheriff's office announced that the three officers who fired their weapons have been placed on paid administrative leave and that the investigation is ongoing. The case file will later be submitted to the prosecutor's office.
Social media backlash
The rapid spread of the footage on social media brought intense criticism of the police use of force. Many users reacted to the officers' failure to use non-lethal methods, such as a taser, to subdue the woman.
Some commentators described the three officers' decision to open lethal fire directly, when they could have stopped the woman by shooting her in the leg, as "laziness." One user recalled the saying "You don't bring a knife to a gunfight," and wrote that the officers' training should be questioned.
Other criticism focused on police violence and social crises in the US. Users argued that a civilian would be prosecuted for excessive force in a similar situation, but police officers often go unpunished.
The incident has reignited debates over police reform and responses to mental health crises.
