Former Michigan University football coach Sherrone Moore avoided a prison sentence in a case stemming from an angry confrontation with a staff member. Washtenaw County District Court Judge J. Cedric Simpson sentenced Moore to 18 months of probation for two separate offenses. Moore admitted to unauthorized entry into his home and misuse of communication devices, but the more serious charges of burglary and stalking were dropped.
Moore was dismissed by the university in December due to an inappropriate relationship. The university stated that Moore had a long-term relationship with a staff member while he was married and took action following incidents after the relationship ended. During the court process, Moore thanked his spouse for support and said he drew strength from his faith. Judge Simpson noted that the support shown by Moore's spouse was influential in reducing the sentence.
The court also imposed conditions that Moore stay away from alcohol and drug use and continue mental health treatment. Additionally, it was decided that he must not have any contact with the former staff member. Moore and his spouse did not make statements to the press after the court, but his lawyer said Moore is ready to leave this process behind and start a new chapter with his family.
Michigan University appointed former Utah University coach Kyle Whittingham to replace Moore. During Moore's tenure, the team's performance was inconsistent, and following the incidents at the end of the season, the university administration decided to make a change.
