Adam Fetcher, who served as a press aide to former U.S. President Barack Obama, was fired from his communications role at the City of Minneapolis over allegations of stealing money and credit cards from coworkers. The 42-year-old Fetcher is said to have used the stolen money to purchase kratom, an herbal substance used in the treatment of opioid addiction.
The incident came to light after Fetcher allegedly began stealing cash and credit cards from municipal employees upon returning from a rehabilitation program. Security cameras showed Fetcher buying kratom from a store called Minneapolis Tobacco & Vapor, located about 1.5 kilometers from his home.
Store manager Hamza Zamara confirmed that they helped authorities identify the suspect and that Fetcher made purchases with fake cards. Police launched an investigation after a woman reported unauthorized transactions on her card. On Fetcher's second visit to the store, employees took his photo and noted his vehicle's license plate, then followed him.
Zamara said they told the suspect, "We know what you're doing." A spokesperson for the Hennepin County Attorney's Office confirmed that the file had been received and was under review. Fetcher's attorney has not yet commented.
Fetcher, who earned an annual salary of $186,000, was dismissed on July 1. City Operations Director Margaret Anderson Kelliher did not provide details about the reason for his departure in an email to staff. In a separate note, she wrote that in May and June some personnel reported that cash, bank and credit cards had gone missing and unauthorized charges had been made.
Kelliher said, "I know this information may be alarming, but I want to assure you that the city is taking the matter seriously and has taken appropriate action," adding that they currently believe there is no ongoing risk of theft.
In addition to the Obama administration, Fetcher previously held senior communications positions at companies such as Patagonia, Rivian and Lyft.
