U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking to journalists after the NATO Summit in Ankara, described Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as 'a very good ally.' Trump thanked Erdoğan, stating that he runs a very successful country and has a strong army.
Trump also touched on operations against Iran during his speech. 'We did what needed to be done in Iran 47 years ago. We eliminated Iran's military capability in a few weeks,' he said. He claimed that runways at airports and leaders were eliminated, and most missile launchers were destroyed.
Stating that the U.S. gives by far the best contribution to NATO, Trump said, 'We've had talks about reaching the 5 percent target. We will get trillions of dollars for defense.' He asserted that exactly $19.2 trillion in investment was attracted to the U.S.
Trump emphasized that relations with Turkey are at their best level, and regarding F-35 jets, he said, 'It's the best plane in the world. Everybody wants it. We will discuss who we will give it to.' Reiterating that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons, Trump said, 'You say this is not a success, but it's a huge success.'
Noting that he met with many leaders at the summit, Trump said Syrian President Shara is doing a great job. 'It was very clear in our conversation that the U.S. is back. There was love in the room. It was a very successful summit,' he said, and again thanked Erdoğan.
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar, however, said at the summit, 'We are continuing humanitarian aid to Ukraine, but Hungary will not send weapons or troops to Ukraine.'
