France's Yellow Vest movement returned to the streets Saturday, staging protests against the rising cost of living in Paris, Lyon, Rennes, Marseille and Toulouse. Labor unions and students backed the marches, which also targeted the government's education and economic policies.
Because the protests fell on Halloween, many demonstrators wore comic-book costumes. In Paris, marchers chanted "We want a general strike" and carried signs reading "Macron, you shame France."

Clashes across the country
Police fired tear gas at crowds gathered at Porte de Charenton, where the Paris march ended. Officers used batons and tear gas in Rennes and water cannon in Toulouse, while masked protesters in Marseille threw stones and bottles at police.

The movement's Oct. 17 protests turned violent, damaging or looting more than 3,000 businesses and prompting the government to tighten security, including partial curfews. More than 1,000 people have been injured and about 2,000 detained since the protests began.
