A crowd of protesters chased police officers down a city street in France, footage shows, as student-led demonstrations over school conditions and budget cuts escalated across the country.
High school students have clashed with riot police in several cities this week. Tear gas filled the streets of Strasbourg, fireworks were fired at police lines in Marseille and rubbish bins were set on fire in Rennes. In Paris’s 20th district, a trainee police officer was chased by a group of young men, tripped and kicked after she fell.

Nearly 2,000 arrests

The Interior Ministry recorded 1,949 arrests on Thursday alone, with 305 police officers and gendarmes injured. More than 400 schools were closed after the rallies, and some protesters set fire to school buildings and vehicles.
The protests, which began over overcrowded classrooms and funding shortfalls, have become one of the biggest challenges for the government as it tries to push through spending cuts to rein in France’s deficit.
